This book, a collaboration between the OECD and the International Institute of Social History, responsible for the Clio-Infra project, examines many of the variables found in the OECD Better Life Index from an historical perspective, going back to 1820. To a certain extent, it relies on historical economic data developed by Angus Maddison in his books on The World Economy. This book provides interesting international comparisons of well-being historically, along with a methodological framework used to carry the work forward.
