IF YOU’RE AT COURT WITHOUT A LAWYER
If you’re at court, and you don’t already have a solicitor to advise and represent you, you should ask to see the duty solicitor before you go into the court room.
The Children’s Legal Service (part of the Legal Aid Commission of NSW) advises and represents children and young people in criminal matters before the Children’s Court. The Children’s Legal Service has duty solicitors at various Children’s Courts. Legal Aid also provides duty solicitors to advise and represent children and young people at other Children’s Courts around NSW.

If you’re Aboriginal and in police custody, you have a right to speak to a lawyer from the Aboriginal Legal Service. All police stations have the phone number for the Aboriginal Legal Service. This number can be called 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If you’re under 18, and you cannot contact the Aboriginal Legal Service, you can call the Legal Aid Youth Hotline instead on 1800 10 18 10.
